How to Sanitize Your Different Beauty Tools

Last updated 1 year ago

A career in cosmetology gives you the opportunity to help people look and feel great. An important part of that process is taking your client’s health into consideration. Whether you’re a hairstylist or a nail technician, sanitizing your tools will preserve their quality and prevent the spread of bacteria. Here’s how to properly sanitize your beauty tools:

Makeup Brushes

You can prevent bacterial growth on your makeup applicators with a simple deep cleaning at the end of each week. Baby shampoo is a gentle and effective way to remove residual cosmetic products on the bristles. Massage a small amount of shampoo onto the bristles and rinse with lukewarm water. Allow the brushes to air dry on a clean towel.

Pedicure Tools

Get in the routine of cleaning your pedicure equipment to avoid the outbreak of fungi and other infections. Use a cleaning spray to sanitize nail clippers, files, and other metal instruments after each use with a client. Make sure to use a cleaning agent that is capable of killing bacteria in pedicure bowls and tubs.

Manicure Tools

Like pedicure tools, manicure tools can also spread infections among different users. If you’re working with non-disposable instruments, use soap and water to clean them after each use. You can also soak them in a disinfectant solution for 20 minutes to kill germs. Don’t forget to also sanitize the trays, jars, or bottles that you keep these tools in.

Hair Tools

Hairbrushes and combs can transfer oil and bits of skin to others if they are not sanitized after each use. Simply pick all hair out of a brush and let it soak in warm water with a little shampoo. Hair clippers should also be sanitized with soapy water or an alcohol solution. Avoid using only water, as it could cause your shears to rust and lose their sharpness. To ensure that your shears maintain the best function, rub a dab of oil onto the blades with a soft cloth.
