What Are the Differences Between Cosmetologists, Barbers and Hairdressers?

Last updated 1 year ago

The right hairstyle can be the perfect accessory to any look. If you have a passion for creating new hairstyles, you can enhance your skills by enrolling in beauty school. Here is a closer look at the differences between three popular professions you can pursue after attending beauty school:

  • Cosmetologists

Cosmetologists focus on helping clients feel more confident in their appearance. If you pursue a career as a cosmetologist, you will provide a wide variety of beauty treatments for your clients. Cosmetologists often perform haircutting, hair lightening, hair straightening, manicuring, facial grooming, and skin care treatments.

  • Barbers

This profession has been an important part of many cultures and civilizations throughout history. Barbers tend to have a smaller list of services, focusing solely on hair found on the clients’ heads and faces. Available barbershop treatments typically include shampooing, trimming, haircutting, hairstyling, and facial hair grooming. While licensed cosmetologists often work with both women and men, licensed barbers tend to have a high number of male clients. During your beauty school program, you will learn sterilization and sanitation, straight-edge shaving, how to properly handle mustaches and beards, and much more!

  • Hairdressers

This career is similar to that of a cosmetologist, though hairdressers focus more on providing a variety of fabulous treatments for client’s hair. Hairdressers learn how to properly care for and work with a number of different hair types during their time in hairdressing school. This gives these beauty experts the skills they need to cut, color, straighten, perm, and style hair for all of their clients!
